MASS: art on the environmental histories and futures of Curl Curl (paperback)

$20.00

Long-form catalogue essay for the MASS group exhibition at Curl Curl Creative Space, September 18 - 28, 2024. MASS was the third in a trilogy of sister shows that included MATERIALITY (2023) at DRAW Space and MATTER (2024) at Woollahra Gallery. These exhibitions featured a cohort of artists engaged with ecological mark-making. Curator Daniel Press defines ecological mark-making as an expanded drawing practice that fosters an artist's bond with the environment. Here, the experience of being within the environment makes nature an active participant in practice-based research. Each artist responded to the environmental impacts on the coastal suburb of Curl Curl since colonial settlement, from the waterway that stretches from Greendale Creek downstream towards Curl Curl Lagoon and the ocean. To produce this exhibition, Press received the 2024 Northern Beaches Emerging Curator Award. MASS featured artists Penny Coss, Kristy Gordon, Joyce Lubotzky, Emma Pinsent, Chrystal Rimmer, Brigitta Summers, Sarah Yaacoub, and Mei Zhao.
