DRAW Space

Movement Study is a live dance, drawing and performance work where Kristone Capistrano draws the motion of dancers through rapid gestures using ink on paper. Quick calligraphic marks chase the flow of the movements of bodies in space. The audience surrounds the artist and dancers, witnessing the live flow of gestures, mark-making, and choreography. Originally conceived during a 2023 residency with Emerging Islands, Philippines, the participatory live performance makes an Australian debut at DRAW Space.

Artist Kristone Capistrano and dancers Hugo Poulet, Cassidy Mcdermott Smith and Shantelle Low.

Kristone Capistrano, Movement Study at DRAW Space, 2024. Dance improv, live drawing, music, ink on paper. In collaboration with Hugo Poulet, Cassidy Mcdermott Smith and Shantelle Low. Documentation by Richard Trang.

“The gestural ink works became like calligraphic imprints of a body in movement… The drawings and gestures began to weave and twist amongst each other on the page, shadowing the dancer’s trajectories on the dance floor”.

— Kristone Capistrano

How is he going to fit all those dancers in that space?

Movement Study (2024) by Kristone Capistrano has yet to happen, but it will be jostley, might be a little squeezy, and will likely offer something unexpected. Combining dance and calligraphic drawing is new for DRAW Space but is a natural extension of our other public programmes. Arguably, dance, the movement of a body through space is a kind of drawing, so it will be interesting to see how Kristone's mark-making responds to the movement and how the movement reflects the drawing.

Kristone Capistrano is known for his large-scale charcoal drawings, which have been exhibited in the Blake and the Dobell Drawing Prize, amongst others. His figurative work is gestural and in-the-moment. I can't wait to see how he responds to the various dance types, hip hop, ballet, and traditional, that will be mingling in the space…

Come and squeeze in with us. It's bound to offer something unexpected.
